We just made the final turn in 2024, and started the new year with a bit of a bang.
My Aurora notification app went off at about 4:15am on the 1st…and a quick check showed a hint of red on the horizon. So off we went to a local spot I use often fairly often.
Ultimately the lights didn’t disappoint…providing a nice show up until dawn, when only the sun would wash away the colors.
Perhaps we’ll have another good year ahead with amazing displays before things subside for another 10 or 11 years.
I’ve been playing around with the Kelvin setting on the aurora shots…many folks will recommend working in the 3600 to 4000 range but this seems to be more tailored to the greens…which are far more common up north. Around our southerly parts, we see far more red, pink, and purple…with some green on the horizon. I really like that blend of colors. Based on that I think something around 4500 to 5000 seems to work best for what I’m seeing here in Iowa.
This shot was taken with a Canon 6D and a Sigma 28mm 1.4 lens. Kelvin was at 4996.
