Last week I took a trip up to the North shore of Lake Superior and spent some time looking for Great Grey Owls. It was a first for me, but really culminated in a very memorable experience.
This winter season has turned out to be an irruption year for owls from the far northern boreal forests. This includes the Northern Hawk Owl, Boreal Owl, and the Great Grey Owl. Many of the larger grey owls are being spotted all over the north shore.
When lemming populations crash in their home areas, the owls are forced to go south looking for food, and voles and other rodents will certainly do for a time.
