If there were one thing that stood out during our visit to the Loess Bluffs Wildlife Refuge, it would have to be the snow geese. Tens of thousands will get your attention. But they also attract the interest of a number of predators which, in my mind, make the whole experience that much better.
Over 100 bald eagles were hanging around, looking for an easy meal. Hawks abound, mostly looking for small rodents, snakes, and such to make it through the winter. And then there’s the coyotes. We saw several…and while I blew a few stellar shots…I got one that at least showed them in their element. Stalking, scanning, surveying the situation like any good predator would do…looking for the ill, the injured, or the weak. They have their place, and a critical role to play, in keeping everything in order.
