Young Gun – Bald Eagle

March 6, 2020

If you get tired of the contrasty black and white of the adult Bald Eagle, be sure to take a gander at some of the juveniles you’ll see around…usually every winter that’s a pretty good batch of them.  From one year up to 5 years of age, you will see varying stages or degrees of plumage…evolving from the super dark, brown birds, into what we think of as the typical Bald Eagle.  Sometimes these young birds get mistaken for Golden Eagles because they have some of the same colorations.   Just know that the vast majority of these dark birds around Iowa will be baldies…like this fine looking young eagle flying over the Iowa river.
