The Vastness Of Space

July 25, 2020

Look up up the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense if what you see, and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. ~ Stephen Hawking

If nothing else, chasing the Neowise comet around has raised my awareness of the vastness of space.  Yes, I know, all one needs to do is look up and get a sense of that…and on this night, the skies were clear, and sharp, and vibrant.  Even in Iowa, despite all the light pollution, it felt like you could see forever.  Keep in mind, at it’s closest point to earth, the comet will still be something like 64 million miles away.  It’s 3 mile wide body is made up of ice and dust and has often been referred to as a “dirty snowball’ and it’s leaving a trail of debris that’s millions of miles long.  Those seem like huge numbers, until you consider the breadth of the universe.  And right now, I’m feeling rather small.
