The Grand Sunrise

December 29, 2018

It’s a beautiful thing when plans come together…maybe even better than you imagined.  It would never take much persuasion for someone to get me to go to Badlands National Park in western South Dakota.  I really enjoy this park and the trips we’ve had out there.  There is a particular section of the park that I think I enjoy more than any others, although there is no shortage of spots that will capture your attention.  But on this trip I was focusing quite a lot on this area…shooting several sunrises with the idea that I wanted to print and frame one of these.  The first morning was super clear…too clear really…with hardly a cloud in the sky.  But the second morning was spectacular.  I prefer to shoot now before the sun has crested the horizon and in that way the light remains soft and pretty even.  And the clouds tend to pop a bit more too…and today they certainly did.  I finally felt like I was in the right place, at the right time.  One can’t help but feeling blessed to be in the presence of something this grand.
