Solitary Sandpiper

June 12, 2020

This Solitary Sandpiper was found just down the road from my home…methodically wading through some backwater shallow pools, looking for insects or amphibians that would make up an early breakfast.  I love watching a wading bird work…if it doesn’t give you reason to relax, chill out, and just zen a little bit, something is out of kilter.  They exude a peacefulness in their work…unless you’re a small frog I suppose.   As their name implies, they are often found alone. Iowa was not the last stop for this lonely bird however.  It is likely headed to it’s breeding grounds in mid to upper Canada or Alaska…which are least still 1,000 miles away.
