It’s been almost two years since I’ve visited Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge in Northwest Missouri. Rampant flooding in the spring of 2019 made the area almost impassable, but the waters have now receded, and this late winter is looking to be a lot more stable…so theres hope for a more normal spring this year. With some reports of up to 500,000 snow geese on the refuge, even though most of it is still iced up…well it was hard to pass up a quick trip down there to get my goose fix. And they didn’t disappoint….they never do really. Watch a few massive blast offs brought on by some menacing overflights by eagles, and you will understand the allure I think. Here the back group exited in haste with a blur of bodies and wings….while the front flock remained calm and composed. At least for another second or two.
