Red-Bellied Woodpecker

May 25, 2020

Of late I’ve been seeing a lot of a particular Red-bellied Woodpecker.  She is, or appears to be a little different than most of the other ones around…a little paler, more gray…and is just stunning to see up close.  My photograph, as usual, doesn’t really do them enough justice for how good they look to the eye.  You can tell this is a female by the gray on top of the head…the males will be all red up there.  So, you might wonder…why not call them a red head?  Well one  of those already exists and since it has more red color…the entire head is usually red…it wins that moniker.  As for this woodpecker, you can see just a hint of color on her upper belly…so the name does fit the bird.
