The P-51, in any kind of color scheme, is a beautiful bird. It was one of the premiere fighting aircraft to come out of the WWII era. A number are still flying…most after some rigorous and expensive restorations. But I think this is important work, not only for aviation enthusiasts but also for the sake of history.
This plane, the Quicksilver Mustang was restored by Bill Yoak. He acquired some parts, and did most of the sheet metal work from scratch to create this stunning machine. He began the work in 1994 and took his maiden flight in Quicksilver in 2007.
As a tribute to veterans, Yoak used an experimental type of sparkling paint that was difficult to use and took may attempts to get right. But, he succeeded and when the sun catches the paint, you see countless little stars that represent a veteran who fought for our freedom.
