Crab apple fruit is not necessarily finger food. I spent some time this fall studying what type of crab apple trees these waxwings tend to frequent. In some cases it was a matter of how ripe the fruit got…the softer the better it seems, but also the size mattered. Too big, and well, you know, if you can’t break it up, it would be hard to eat. And waxwings appear to like to gobble things down. My observations indicated they liked a tree variety called the Donald Wyman. So, with plans of putting a few crab apple trees out back, you can rest assured, one of them at least, will be a Donald Wyman. Here’s a nice reference on the different types of crab apple trees. I love how they bloom out in the spring, and fruit out in the fall…and they seem great for the birds.
