I go to Nebraska pretty much every year now…at least once in the spring…sometimes twice in March or early April. The trip is mainly to see the crane migration but it might also involve Prairie Chickens or Sharptail Grouse…all are birds I enjoy taking pictures of.
On this last visit, I came across a new promo graphic in a state tourism guide that said, and I quote, “Nebraska – Honestly, it’s not for everyone.” And I couldn’t help but laugh out loud when I read it. They hit the nail on the head with that slogan.
Years ago it wasn’t uncommon for me to bemoan the long, flat, almost straight drive through there on I-80…while we just itched to get into Colorado or Wyoming…places that would eventually provide a bit more scenery. I’m not the first person, nor will I be the last, to make a point to drive through Nebraska throughout the night…just to avoid seeing it.
But in doing that, I’ve learned that I’ve been missing out on some interesting things. Birding there, at certain times of the year, can be amazing, unforgettable, and well, about as epic as you can get. Along with that, Nebraska has a rich history…of Native American life, pioneers and wagon trains, early military forts of the western expansion, and if you really want to go back a few more years, some very interesting places with fossils and natural landmarks that would blow your mind.
So, no…Nebraska likely won’t knock your socks off with stunning mountain views, or be as tranquil as a seaside walk on the beach…both are great and highly recommended. I just wouldn’t count Nebraska out for showing you a good time if you give it a chance.
