More On Shorty’s

December 15, 2020

Shorty’s, or Short Eared Owls more officially, are interesting critters. They are one of several owls that hunt during the day, as well as at night. They nest on the ground, and spend much of their time there while roosting. They rely heavily on hearing, over eyesight, for hunting. They appear to be lopers, lollygaggers, and generally slow flyers when they are mostly hunting. But they can turn into dramatic aerialists and a speed burner when another owl gets too close to an established territory for breeding or hunting. Then, you really get to see what they can do in the air…and it is impressive.
