Leftovers – Bald Eagle

March 28, 2020

You have to hand it to the eagle…sometimes they just aren’t picky.  From observation, I think some birds prefer fresh fish…they’ll wait patiently for the right opportunity to hunt a live and floppy fish, plucked right from the water.  In other cases, some individuals are a lot less finicky.  Fish, long expired, but trapped in ice, will be chipped or picked out, bit by bit, and other times, some savory morsels…mostly intact (but sometimes not) will be pulled from the mud…kind of like this fairly intact, but slightly aged, mucky fish…or what used to be a fish:)   To be honest, I suspect the less picky eaters also tend to be the survivors…well, unless one is an excellent hunter.  But this versatility…and yes, I see this variable appetite as an asset.  It gives them another chance to make it one more day…and that’s exactly what it takes to survive, year after year.
