Late Day Light Show – Fireflies

July 29, 2020

Fireflies are fascinating little creatures.  On this particular evening as storms had just rolled through the area, the lightning bugs came out just as they normally would have, seemingly unbothered by such a disruption.  The clouds and sunset were changing by the second…and a slight gap allowed the amber and pink hues to come through for just a moment.

But back to the Fireflies….they are actually beetles, and they are found on almost every continent, other than Antarctica.  The blinking you see is their route of communication…mainly to attract a mate, but they have a broader light vocabulary than that.  Sometimes they will blink in time or unison…and the blinking will change from long drawn out glows, to fast pulses.  Their eggs also light up, which makes scientists think it might also be a defensive act against predators.  There’s more of course, but today I’ll leave you with one additional attribute…they are incredibly fun to watch!
