Frost On The Prairie – Bison

February 24, 2019

A recent visit to Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge provided me with a most memorable start to the day.  With the day before being a good bit warmer, this morning broke, very cold at about 8 degrees.  When this happens it’s not uncommon to see hoarfrost form on everything and when it does…you will witness some thing magical.

As I passed along through the prairie grasses, they were enlightened by what looked like a million twinkling stars.  The sunlight made each one burst with numerous points of light…and the glittering just became more enhanced as you moved along.  I have never witnessed anything quite like it.  I wish now I had tried to video the scene…still photos just don’t do it justice…suffice it to say though…it was a magical morning!

Bison and elk were foraging close by and many were covered with this frost as well.  They weren’t bothered by it at all, and just carried on, bull-dozing their way through deep snow to get to the grasses buried deep below.
