This has been an active year for Sharp-shinned Hawk activity in the backyard. At least two of them have been regular visitors. This young one though takes the cake…so to speak. I have never experienced anything like it. It had apparently had a very good breakfast of something and seemed so fat and happy it just didn’t want to fly. For most of the morning, I saw no birds visiting the feeders…it was eerily quiet. I even went out and filled the feeders, just to make sure all was well. Still no birds. What I didn’t see at first was this hawk sitting in a tree about 20 feet up. It probably watched me walk by before. So I went out again, this time with a camera…figuring at worst, it would fly off and the locals could finally get their chance to eat. But it was a no-go. The hawk could not care one bit about me walking around…in fact, we had a nice discussion, lasting probably 45 minutes. We agreed that starlings were far better tasting than Cardinals or Woodpeckers. Finally, a large truck drove through the neighborhood and must have inspired it enough to fly.
