Bald Eagle – Coralville Dam

January 6, 2020

We are moving into the time of year when I’ll probably be posting more Bald Eagle images to the site.  It’s just what we do around here in the winter months.  Although you can’t say it’s a slam dunk from year to year, the fact is, eagles are the most commonly photographed bird right now, at least around me.  The weather has been so warm thus far, that we aren’t seeing them much on the dams of the big river however the backwaters and smaller river dams and spillways have got some birds around and the fish populations look good, which is what will keep them around for the long haul.  This image was taken a few days ago at the Coralville dam north of Iowa City.  It is a great place to visit and watch the birds.  Take the kids and teach them a bit about eagles…it’s time well spent.  Be sure too, to respect the birds space…if you can, stay in your vehicle, or stay back a ways and you’ll see plenty of action.  Avoid getting too close…if you see birds leaving upon your approach, your simply too close and won’t have much to see but a bird butt!
