Woodpeckers

March 10, 2023

For the most part, the Woodpeckers we have in the backyard get along alright. But like any family, you’ll run into a squabble now and then. And make no mistake, there is a “pecking order” in the group. The Flickers are the toughest in my estimation, followed by the Red-Bellies, then the Redheads, and then the two smallest, Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers, who just stay out of everyone else’s way. I’d toss in the big Piliated Woodpecker if we saw them more often and maybe one day we will, but you gotta show up to make this list! Anyway, in the photograph, a Red-Belly (bottom) makes a fairly blunt suggestion that the Redhead needs to find another perch.
