National Hummingbird Day

September 7, 2020

A day late and a dollar short as usual. Saturday was National Hummingbird Day. I know, they have a day for everything now…but this one was timely as we watched an array of little birds buzzing around the backyard.

They are almost in constant motion now. The resident bossy male is working constantly to protect his feeder while the young of the year and females try to get a drink in between chases. He is literally hours away from leaving I think…could be today, or tomorrow, or the next but I suspect with the incoming cold front, he’ll be heading southward for the long haul to his wintering spot.

Then the rest of the birds will vie for access to the feeders, if only for a little while, before they depart as well.
