International Space Station – ISS

September 28, 2025

Every now and then the orbit of the International Space Station passes over Iowa. It can easily be spotted with the naked eye.

The ISS is traveling at over 17,000 mph and orbits the earth every 90 minutes. The astronauts on the space station get to see sunrises and sunsets 16 times per “day” or in a 24 hour period.

It was actually built in orbit…modules were sent up in pieces and put together in space. Its 356 feet long and weighs 450 tons.

You can get updates on the precise location and projected flight paths by visiting this page on Astro Viewer.
