Owls, as well as other birds of prey are well known for having amazing eyesight. But birds like the Short Eared Owl, and Marsh Hawk, actually hunt a lot by sound. Their faces are disc shaped and it’s obvious they have evolved with features that support the use of hearing for hunting. Watch them a bit over the marshes or prairie and you may be lucky enough to see them do an ultrafast wingover before plunging into cover to grab a mouse or vole that made a little too much noise rustling around in the underbrush.
