Iowa is known for many things, but two predominant ones in my mind are old barns and summer thunderstorms. Now I’ll grant you, old barns, particularly those that have been preserved as well as this one at Discovery Park in Muscatine, are becoming a rarity. Many have fallen into decay or disrepair and are simply succumbing to the ravages of time. Fortunately some are being saved and I’m grateful for that.
Regarding the lovely summer weather…well in Iowa that can range from beautifully mild and clear, to the muggy and stifling with oppressive heat and humidity. Usually with the latter, if there were one good thing about it, you’ll find gigantic, billowing clouds…sometimes dark and menacing, sometimes almost angelic white…that often lead to an afternoon thunderstorm.
They also make a nice backdrop to a beautiful old barn.
